HOWO Truck Engine Cooling System Parts Guide

Engine Oil Cooler: Protecting the Lifeblood of the Engine

The engine oil cooler sits between the oil filter housing and the block, using coolant to draw heat out of the engine oil. On HOWO trucks with WD615 engines, this is a compact plate-and-shell unit that must handle high oil pressure without leaking and high temperature without losing effectiveness.

Failure symptoms: oil temperature that climbs under load, coolant contamination (oil in the expansion tank), or oil leaks around the cooler gasket. A cracked cooler can mix oil and coolant — a catastrophic failure that damages bearings and the cooling system at the same time. Because the pump is relatively inexpensive compared with the damage it prevents, replacing it at the first sign of bearing noise or seepage is standard fleet practice.


Radiator and Fan: Rejecting the Heat

The radiator rejects the heat absorbed by the coolant. HOWO radiators are aluminum-core units sized for the engine's heat load, and the fan — either viscous-coupling or electronically controlled — pulls air through the core when ram airflow is insufficient, such as at low speed or under heavy load in traffic.

Radiator problems show up as coolant loss, white steam from the front of the truck, or a permanently running fan. Blocked fins from mud and dust are common in construction and mining applications, and fin cleaning is often the cheapest fix. When replacement is needed, matching the core dimensions, inlet/outlet positions, and mounting points to the original is essential — a radiator that does not fit correctly causes clearance and airflow problems.


Thermostat, Hoses and Belts: The Small Parts That Cause Big Failures

The thermostat regulates coolant flow to bring the engine to operating temperature quickly and hold it there. A stuck-open thermostat causes slow warm-up and higher fuel consumption; a stuck-closed one causes rapid overheating. Hoses carry coolant between components and fail through age, heat, and pressure — external cracking, swelling, or softness before failure. Fan belts and alternator belts that slip or break stop the water pump and the charging system together, which is why belt inspection is part of every preventive maintenance interval. These small parts are cheap, but a roadside failure in a loaded truck is not.
